My path in life took a while to figure out
1.
I was always a huge reader and wanted to write novels when I was a kid.
2.
When I got to high school, I started reading the newspaper and getting more interested in journalism.
3.
I applied to colleges for journalism, but then I toured the LA Times office - an intern coordinator told me the industry was declining and I was gonna have a tough road ahead.
4.
I panicked and turned down a journalism program and decided to take a HARD left ... into accounting.
5.
I was obviously miserable majoring in accounting, and after taking a few writing classes, I switched into English.
6.
I joined the campus newspaper as a copyeditor. I worked my way up the copy desk and was tapped to also edit the Opinion section my senior year.
7.
After college, I worked a few odd jobs (working as a receptionist, editing a blog) before I was hired as a copywriting intern at Roadtrip Nation.
8.
Four years later, I'm still here, working on the copywriting team full-time.
Defining Moments
How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Society in general:
You're never going to make any money as a writer.
How I responded:
I backed out of attending journalism school because I was so afraid that I would never be able to find a job. But ultimately, the only thing I enjoyed in college were my writing classes, so it crept back into my life. And no, finding a job after college wasn't easy, but after a few weird writing jobs, I've managed to find a job that lets me do what I love AND live comfortably. If you're into writing but scared of being a starving artist, copywriting is actually a pretty great path!
