    Messages from Parents:

    Originally, I wanted to pursue performing arts due to my dance and cheerleading background. I received backlash from my parents because they felt that major would not lead to a sustainable career pathway.

  • How I responded:

    I dealt with this discouragement by continuing to analyze myself and my interests in order to pick a major. She was able to pick a major that I was passionate about and that my parents still approved of.

  • I am a first-generation college student. Throughout my K-12 education, I felt disconnected with school. This was because of a lack of connectivity with my teachers. However, entering college helped me overcome this disconnection.
